The Althoff Dom Hotel in Cologne is not only a place of hospitality and relaxation, but also a living part of the city's history.
The hotel looks back on a long and eventful history dating back to the Middle Ages. Originally, medieval buildings such as the "Kamphof" and the "zum Palast" estate stood on the site. These initially served as venues for judicial duels and later as residential and commercial buildings.
The first Dom Hotel was built on this site in the 19th century. It was opened in 1840 under Albert Harff and is now one of the oldest grand hotels in Europe. After several renovations and modernisations to offer its guests the highest level of comfort and state-of-the-art amenities, the hotel developed into a central social meeting place in Cologne. Famous personalities such as Kaiser Wilhelm II and Mata Hari have stayed here.
The hotel was largely destroyed during the Second World War, but reconstruction began in 1947 and the Dom Hotel was continuously modernised and expanded over the following decades.
In the 1950s in particular, the Dom Hotel experienced a heyday when it hosted numerous prominent guests from the worlds of politics, business and entertainment.
We have made it our mission to preserve the hotel's rich history while offering contemporary luxury. Following the extensive restoration, during which the historic exterior façade was preserved, the Althoff Dom Hotel will continue to operate as part of the architecturally appealing "DomCarré" building ensemble. The listed 4711 building is also part of the hotel complex and contributes to the unique atmosphere.
The 5-star hotel is a very special place that reflects the culture, history and lifestyle of the cathedral city in a unique way and guarantees you an unrivalled experience.
