Drachenfels & Drachenburg Castle

The Drachenfels is a place where pure tranquillity meets something truly extraordinary. As the first rays of sunlight set the Rhine shimmering, the path winds through the picturesque Siebengebirge up to one of the finest panoramas in the region – crowned by the ruins of a 12th-century castle. Those wishing to pause on the way to the ruins should not miss Drachenburg Castle. This magnificent 19th-century palace feels as though it has stepped straight from the pages of a fairy tale. The meticulously restored interiors are particularly impressive: the Nibelungenzimmer, the staircase adorned with its delicate wall paintings, and the Neo-Gothic art hall transport visitors to a world long gone.

"My tip: set out early in the morning or at sunset. The historic rack railway in particular gives me a wonderful sense of stepping back in time. In the evening, you can round off the day with a fine glass of wine in our restaurant. Within the castle itself, I find it remarkably easy to transport myself to bygone eras. The journey through time that awaits you there is truly one of a kind."

Altenberger Dom

An aerial view of a historic stone church surrounded by lush greenery and trees. The church features a tall steeple and intricate architecture, set against a backdrop of rolling hills and a clear sky.

Altenberg Cathedral looks back on an eventful history that began in 1133 with the founding of a Cistercian monastery. In this idyllic spot in the Dhünn Valley, the monks built an impressive Gothic cathedral that continues to captivate visitors to this day. Following the dissolution of the monastery in 1806, the cathedral initially fell into disrepair but was saved thanks to the commitment of the Prussian royal family. Today it serves as a multi-denominational church and stands as a symbol of ecumenism in action – a place of encounter, culture and faith, nestled within the picturesque countryside of the Bergisches Land.

„For me, Altenberg Cathedral is a very special place of power. Anyone looking for peace and quiet, history and impressive architecture will love it. As one of the most beautiful Gothic churches in Germany, situated in the heart of the Bergisches Land, it has a unique, light-filled atmosphere. The exquisite stained-glass windows are a real highlight. The surrounding area is also lovely for walks along the Dhünn or for a coffee break. My tip: Visit the cathedral in the late afternoon – the light is simply magical and unforgettable.“

Lanxess Arena

The history of the LANXESS Arena began in the mid-1980s with the desire to build a modern event venue for Cologne. After overcoming a number of obstacles, the project was realised as a privately funded venture. The breakthrough came with the design by the architectural firm Böhm, which harmoniously integrates the arena into its surroundings. Opened in 1998 as the ‘Kölnarena’, it has developed into Germany’s largest multi-purpose arena. Today it is known as the LANXESS Arena and is one of the most well-attended venues in the world, where global stars and major sporting events create unforgettable moments.

„When it comes to big moments, the Lanxess Arena – affectionately known to us Cologne locals as the ‘Henkelmännchen’ – is my first choice. Whether it’s concerts, sport or shows, the energy in Germany’s largest multi-purpose arena is simply unique. I love being there in person and soaking up the special atmosphere. My tip: check in advance to see what events are taking place. But even from the outside, the architecture is a highlight. For me, an evening there is pure joie de vivre that lingers long afterwards – a genuine Cologne experience.“
