Althoff Grandhotel Schloss Bensberg Restaurant Vendôme

In 2023, top chef Joachim Wissler's 2-star restaurant Vendôme was once again awarded 5 Feinschmecker F's and falls into the category of "The Best Restaurants in Germany 2023".

Concept: After his creative break, the long-time grand master of German avant-garde cuisine is back with renewed vigour. Two large menus (from € 260), one vegetarian. Kitchen style: Joachim Wissler and sous-chef Denis Melzer now appear as a duo, together they orchestrate great cuisine at the height of the times, preferring to use local products. Even the lobster no longer comes from Brittany, but from Heligoland, has an intense flavour and is accompanied by confit beetroot, a little calf's head, pimento cream and camomile vinaigrette, and à part there is radish raviolo with lobster giblets. Also typical of Wissler is the roasted calf's brain, covered with red cabbage kimchi varnish, accompanied by pickled porcini mushrooms and celery tahini with black truffle.

Comfort food at the highest level in the vegetarian menu is shrewd buckwheat French toast with porcini mushroom royale, sangohachi beurre blanc and Jerusalem artichoke in various variations.

Wine: The 650-strong menu (with a focus on Germany and France) offers connoisseurs a wide choice.

Atmosphere: In the baroque coachman's house of Bensberg Castle, you sit in a contemporary, stylish setting; friendly, young service.

Verdict: Culinary master class for advanced gourmets.
